Dmitry Batalov – 2020

Dmitry Batalov (c) D.Depoorter

Dmitry Batalov was born in December 1997 in Moscow and completed his studies at the Moscow Central Music School under Andrei Limaev. Continuing his education at the Moscow Conservatory in the class of professor Natalia Trull, Batalov soon joined the rich traditions of both Saint-Petersburg and Moscow piano schools. He quickly acquired the musical depth, technical excellence and vast breadth necessary for the repertoire. Behind the sober intensity of his face and the sharpness of his gaze hides a painter developing his countless harmonic colours, and a true poet of sounds. With a firm knowledge of the classical repertoire acquired through his studies, he has focused largely on the music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, bringing to them not only his perfect technical mastery, but above all a remarkable palette of sounds. Being also a trained musicologist and author of works on Ligeti, Ustvolskaya and Murail, Batalov is now an active participant of concerts and festivals of new music in Moscow. He works as pianist of the Reheard ensemble for contemporary music and has performed Russian premieres of works by T.Murail, M.Stroppa, M.Andre, B.Furrer, J. Harvey and many others – as well as world premieres of young Russian composers. Dmitry has followed the masterclasses of Margaret Leng Tan, Grigory Gruzman, Gerlinde Otto, Fulvio Turissini, Sijavush Gadjiev and is a prizewinner of the International Piano Meetings of San Daniele, and winner of the Yuri Kholopov musicology competition. In 2020, he was awarded the Second Prize and several special prizes at the 14th International piano competition of Orléans (France).
